State Wide Real Estate is the oldest franchised real estate company in America. Hugh Harris started State Wide in Flint, Michigan in 1944, after a successful, albeit dangerous several years organizing the original UAW union. This involved his leadership during the famous Fisher Auto body “sit down” strike and culminated with his organizing auto manufacturing plants across the Upper Midwest.  His wife Elsie demanded that Hugh quit organizing after many vicious attacks and attempts on his life by anti-labor forces.

Hugh finally decided on real estate as a profession and became the founder of State Wide Real Estate.

Hugh Harris, 22, is the great-grandson of founder Hugh Harris and is co-owner of Harris State Wide in Iron Mountain, Michigan. Hugh and his father Steve opened Harris State Wide in November of 2018 and immediately began selling real estate with several closings in 2018– and a GREAT start in 2019 despite horrible weather.

They plan on combining youth and experience, tech ability, and veteran savvy—-using all tools to serve sellers and buyers in the most professional manner possible.

In October 2018 Hugh and his father Steve Harris began their new venture together by opening Harris State Wide Real Estate. With youth and experience combined, this duo is ready to sell. In 2020 Hugh passed his brokers test at 23 years old. Hugh has consistently focused on continued education and the bettering of his skills as a lifelong journey. Being the fourth generation of the Harris family to obtain their license under State Wide Real Estate, Hugh is proud to continue serving the Upper Peninsula community.

As a youth, Hugh volunteered at the Iron Mountain veterans hospital. He played cribbage and other card games with the vets and also helped run bingo games where vets were rewarded with cash winnings.. This year he also spent time volunteering for the Kiwanis Ski Club leading up to the 2024 Great Pine Mountain ski jumps and has been volunteering for many years now. August of 2023 Hugh & Grace became engaged and are planning an October 2024 wedding at Pine Mountain Resort. Hugh and his Fiance Grace Carey also have three cats who like to play like kittens. In his spare time, he enjoys many recreational activities and hobbies. Swimming, playing with his pets, fishing, and hunting are some of his favorites.

The fall of 2021 Hugh came down with a life threatening case of lymes disease and is back, ready to service all of your real estate needs after taking off some extended time to recover.

Having grown up during the technological era, he is adept with, and understands the role technology can play in buying and selling homes. Having taken several classes on the subject he is well versed with most GIS property locating programs and their applicable Real Estate uses. Facebook, Zillow, and an interactive website are now vital elements of marketing the visibility of the property, and for buyers to find what meets their specific needs. Hugh believes that with the help of technology, hard work, and patience it is possible to reach the goal of Bringing People and Places Together.

Steve Harris – (906) 396 3002

steve@statewide.estate

Steve Harris has had a life saturated with real estate listings, sales agreements, and closings. One of his first jobs in high school was delivering title abstracts to be updated, making trust account deposits, building and installing wood post real estate signs—among many other chores at State Wide Real Estate of Escanaba

First licensed in 1980, Steve sold real estate in Marquette to help supplement his income while attending Northern Michigan University…while many friends worked as waiters, bartenders, or in the trades. Steve also worked roofing jobs for several years in his yearly 20’s.

Steve has been a Real Estate Broker in both Michigan and Wisconsin since 1986 and moved to Iron Mountain in December of 1989 after buying out the late Gordon Bean, who had previously owned the Iron Mountain State Wide Real Estate franchise.

Steve is married to Christine of the Escanaba Rudden clan. They have two children, Hugh 22, and Sarah 18 in May 2019.

A perennial Top Producer in the Iron Mountain/Kingsford area, Steve sold well over 3 million in real estate sales in 2018.

Steve is extremely proud of Hugh, who may be the UP’s first 4th generation real estate professional (along with his cousin Drew who passed the exam at the same time) when he obtained his license in 2017—-and Sarah, who excels at sports, music, and academics. Sarah loves Concordia University north of Milwaukee, where she is studying to become a high school teacher.  Hugh and Steve created and formed HARRIS STATE WIDE REAL ESTATE in late 2018 and are located in downtown Iron Mountain in the Moose Jackson building.

Steve has no exact real estate specialty but has an extensive background in residential, commercial, income, recreational, and vacant land properties throughout the central Upper Peninsula and NE Wisconsin.

Steve is a “morning person” but certainly accommodates late day and weekend appointments. Steve puts in more office hours than any broker in the area to better serve the clients and customers at HARRIS STATE WIDE REAL ESTATE.
